Ankit Ji’s advice

The panchang describes the nature of a day; it does not make the day good or bad. Everyday work carries on through Rahu Kaal; for starting something big and new, choosing Abhijit Muhurat or an auspicious tithi is traditionally considered good. Along with the right time, being prepared in mind matters just as much.

The five limbs of the panchang

  • Tithi: every 12° of distance between the Moon and the Sun is one tithi; a month has 30 tithis, in two pakshas.
  • Vaar: the day from one sunrise to the next.
  • Nakshatra: the 27th part of the sky the Moon is in. Find your birth nakshatra.
  • Yoga: the 27 yogas formed from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes.
  • Karana: half a tithi; one tithi has two karanas.

Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal

The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and one part goes to each of these according to the weekday. Traditionally, starting new work is avoided in these periods; everyday work does not stop for them. Abhijit Muhurat is considered the auspicious time in the middle of the day.

Frequently asked questions

How is the tithi of the day decided in the panchang?

A Hindu day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise. The tithi running at sunrise is taken as the tithi for the whole day (udaya tithi). If the tithi changes during the day, the time of the change is also given here.

What is Rahu Kaal and why does it change every day?

The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts; one of them, depending on the weekday, is called Rahu Kaal. Traditionally it is avoided for starting new work. Sunrise and sunset change every day and in every city, so the time of Rahu Kaal changes too.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

The eighth of the day's fifteen muhurtas, the one around midday, is called Abhijit and is traditionally considered auspicious. It is not taken on Wednesdays.

What is the difference between purnimanta and amanta months?

North India follows the purnimanta month (ending on the full moon), while South and West India follow the amanta month (ending on the new moon). In the Shukla paksha both have the same name; in the Krishna paksha the purnimanta month is one ahead. Both are given here.

Why is the panchang different in a different city?

Tithi and nakshatra change at the same moment across the country, but sunrise happens at a different time in every city. So a different tithi may be running at sunrise in another city, and the times of Rahu Kaal and the muhurtas change too. Choose your city above.

What is Bhadra (Vishti karana)?

A karana is half a tithi. Of the seven movable karanas, Vishti is called Bhadra, and traditionally it is avoided for starting auspicious work. Today's karanas are given above with their times.
